Jan 24: Presidents Dinner

SCNY'13-Presidents Dinner - 06

Karen Loew & Tom Picard with the SCNY Gold Medal

Karen Loew & Tom Picard holding the SCNY Medal

(By Mitch Kahn)

The stars turned out to honor Pam Singleton and Tom Picard with the Salmagundi Medal of Honor and to kick off the Utrecht/Ampersand/Salmagundi Tile Sale to benefit the Gallery Renovation Project. The Black and White theme was carried over to the table settings. Due to health issues, Tom couldn’t attend the event so Chris Nunnally made a trip out to his home the day before to videotape an acceptance speech which was shown during the formal presentation and Karen Loew subsequently delivered his medal to him, taking advantage of a very unique photo-op. A wonderful time was had by all and 23 tiles were sold that night.

Jan 14: New Year • New Classes • Check ’em out!

(By Mitch Kahn)

A tweaking of the class schedule at Salmagundi has been in the planning stages for quite a while and officially launches this week with two new classes added. The former Monday class has been folded into the Wednesday class.

SpencerNEW! Elizabeth Spencer: Painting
Thursdays 9am-12pm

Beginning to accomplished students are invited to explore the fundamentals of drawing, design, color and painting techniques in order to enhance their own means of person expression. Through individual attention and demonstrations you will be encouraged to capture the color of light and vitality in your works whether they are still lifes, landscapes, cityscapes or portraits from your own photo or artistic references. Students are welcome to explore any medium they choose including, but not limited to, oil, acrylic, gouache and watercolor.

Elizabeth Spencer has been painting and exhibiting for over 20 years. She is an award winning Resident Artist who serves on the Art and Junior/Scholarship Committees and is a life member of the Art Students League, having studied with Daniel Greene, Richard Pionk, Gregg Kreutz, Mary Beth McKenzie, Peter Cox and Frank Arcuri. Ms. Spencer is a full-time painter who works out of her studio at 41 Union Square.

RochatNEW! Eddie Rochat: Life Drawing
Saturdays 5:30pm-8:30pm

This will be a live model/long pose class designed for both beginners and advanced students, focusing on an investigation of the human figure. Students will be exposed to various drawing concepts that will aid them in their understanding of these complexities. Anatomy perspective and light will be covered, enabling the artist to draw with a heightened awareness of the figure out of which a more holistic approach to drawing can be realized.

Edmond Rochat studied painting, drawing and sculpture at duCret School of Art, The Art Students League and Janus Collaborative School of Art. He supplemented his studies as lab assistant for advanced artistic anatomy offered by the Janus Collaborative and hosted by Drexel University School of Medicine. Rochat received the Mary Elizabeth Scholarship from the NJ Society of Arts and Letters and is recipient of a grant from the John F and Anne Lee Stacey Scholarship Fund. He currently teaches at the Janus Collaborative.

Sherrie McGraw • Painting donated to benefit Salmagundi Renovation Fund

Sherrie McGrawSalmagundians were privileged this past May to enjoy a workshop and demonstration by longtime member Sherrie McGraw. Scheduled during the run of the American Masters Exhibit in the Main Gallery and her own exhibition in the Patron’s Gallery, the product of this oil demonstration was given to SCNY to be sold to benefit the club’s multi-year restoration fund.

Sherrie’s painting, The Brass Pot (20″ x 16″), is currently on display at Salmagundi and carries a price tag of $21,500. Inquiries can be directed to Chris Nunnally.
