Feb 23: Water Color Materials Demo by Sharon Way-Howard

On Saturday, February 23rd, SCNY members and members of the public were invited to a water color materials demonstration by former Art Committee Chair Sharon Way-Howard. The event ended with a raffle of materials donated by M. Graham and Co., Karen Loew and Annie Patt as well as Sharon’s finished painting.

SCNY'13-Sharon Howard Demo - 8Alex Katlan, who was upstairs hosting his own exhibition and sale came down to support the effort by purchasing a few raffle tickets and wound up winning the prize donated by M. Graham and Co., 21 tubes of Sharon’s favorite gouache. Ruth Mendez won a copy of Watercolor Magazine also donated by Sharon. Special thanks to Tom Hedderich for his help in setting up the room.

Next materials demo will take place Saturday, March 16th, 2-3:30 PM. Featured will be SCNY member Joe Gyurcsak, resident artist for Utrecht Art Supplies and noted author, instructor, juror and art materials expert. The focus of his demo will be acrylics.

Katlan Sale: Works by Xavier J. Barile

Artist Xavier J. Barile (1891-1981) was a painter, illustrator and etcher. He studied with Chapman, F. Luis Mora, John Sloan and Dodge. He was a member of the Art Students League of New York, Kit Kat Club, Salmagundi Club (joining in 1954), American Monotype Society, National Society of Painters in Casein and the Society of Independent Artists.

Katlan Sale: Etchings by Daniel Graves

Artist Daniel Graves (b.1949) is a fine oil painter, etcher and director of The Florence Academy of Art, which he founded in 1991. He studied with Joseph Sheppard and Richard Lack. Upon his return to Florence Italy in the 1970’s, he studied with Richard Serrin (1975-76) and at the Villa Schifanoia Graduate School of Fine Arts and with Nerina Simi in 1978. With his colleague Charles Cecil he founded the Cecil-Graves studio and in 1991, the Florence Academy where he continues to teach and paint.

The latest party centered around our Monotype Press saw the addition of both drypoint and conventional acid etchings. Secondary ghost prints have become increasingly popular as the basis to create “colorized” monotypes.
